Mandibular (Facial Vein/Artery) Sampling
This technique is currently employed or limited to adult mice and rats. This technique is preferred over other techniques, due the following reasons:
- Medium to large blood volumes can be obtained.
- Repeated sampling is possible by alternating sides of the face.
- Requires less hands-on training and is safer than retro-orbital bleeding.
- Doesn’t require anesthesia.
- Excessive bleeding can be avoided or controlled by using smaller needle.
Sample Quality
- Variable - mixed (arterial/venous).
- Contamination due to hair or skin possible.
Methodology
- Good restraint is essential for successful blood collection.
- Check the Medipoint website for clear description and anatomical location.
- Apply gentle pressure for 20-30 seconds after collection to ensure hemostasis.
