Transport of Animals

Within Institution: All transfers between animal facilities are performed by Nationwide®. Rodents are transported to the animal facilities (UConn Musculoskeletal Institute and Pharmacology) each day in filtered crates or cages using vendor vehicles or intermediate carrier vehicles.

Non-rodents are transported in vendor owned or contracted vehicles. Dedicated institutional vehicles are used to transport animals between campuses of UConn Health. All vehicles have adequate ambient controls and steps are taken to assure protection and health of both animals and personnel.

Between Laboratories and Animal Holding Facilities: Animals used for experimental procedures can be taken to research laboratories via common corridors. All animals should be transported in their cages covered properly with drapes. For reasons of bio-security, animals transported to laboratories cannot go back to Barrier rooms. Such animals come back to Secondary Barrier rooms, which are lower in the traffic pattern.
